Twenty ways to get more from your MP3 player
1. Protecting your assets
Then you just sprayed your hard earned money on a smart, new MP3 player? Now, surely it makes sense to spend some more money on a cover to keep it shiny and new - especially after the horror stories about nano scratchability.
2. Hearing every sound
Much like elsewhere in the hi-fi, a neglect key aspect of your system, will the other components would be ineffective. Even large MP3 players can be humbled by the low quality 'freedie' headphones they're usually sold with. Upgrading to another couple's budget phones can transform sound. The £ 35 Sennheiser PX100s still as good an investment in better sound.
3. Keep it alive longer
Great-sounding kit is no use if you are caught card with a dead battery, so invest in Gear4's Pocket Power, which includes eight hours of extra juice for your player while you're on the go. It uses four rechargeable AAA batteries charged by your computer via USB. Your trusty iPod will never leave you again!
4. Making a connection
The rigid connection of MP3 player to computer is USB (Universal Serial Bus). The latest version, USB 2.0, is high-speed connection enables faster file transfers. Some MP3 players only USB 2.0 compatible, so first, check your computer is up to it, and if not, please consider upgrading to expedite things. Firewire, which is common on Apple Macs Another quick transfer socket.
5. Using iTunes as your library
Remember that you should not have all your music stored on your laptop. iTunes can act as your desktop music library from which you select specific tracks to load on your laptop. Connect your iPod, open 'Preferences' and click on the iPod icon. Ensure that you are in 'Music' on the screen and click 'manually manage songs and playlists ". Once this is done, you can just drag songs from your library to the highlighted iPod. This also means deleting music files from your iTunes can be done regardless of your connected iPod.
6. Trimming your songs
Bonus tracks on CDs are well and good but where is it fun having to sit through 10 minutes of silence before your next track? Fret no more. You can easily get rid of something uncomfortable silences through iTunes. Select the errant track, click on 'File' and then "Get Info". Then select 'Options' dialog box. 'Start Time' and 'Stop Time' options you can specify exactly when the melody starts and stops.
7. Keep the tunes on the level
If there is one sure way to ruin your trip to work, it is with your ears affected a track twice as high as the rest. The solution? Download iTunes to sell music to the same volume. Click on 'iTunes', then 'Settings' and then "Playback". Just tick the "Sound Check" button, and iTunes will do its magic.
8. Freakin 'format wars
The generic name for digital music players, MP3 players, now is a little confusing. MP3 is just one of many file formats, which you can choose to rip your music into the order sound quality, I would rank the three most known systems, as follows: AAC, WMA and MP3. Then there is the bit-rate (ie the quality of the file) to consider, too.
9. Upping your bit rates
Bit-rate of a file that refers to the amount of information (in kb) in each second of data. The higher the bit rate, the better the sound, but files is larger, and so take up more space on your hard disk. For better sound, stick to 192kbps and above. To adjust this in iTunes, go to 'iTunes', then 'Settings', then 'Advanced'. Click 'Import' tab, and get tweaking that bit-rate. Note that you can not increase bit-rates retrospectively: musical data left out can not be put back later.
10. CD quality
Okay, so now you know that bit-rate affects sound quality (and size) of your music files. So what happens if you want the best sound? If you have room on your computer, there are a number of "lossless" models which provide the highest quality. Lossless codecs such as FLAC, shortening, and Apple Lossless Muse a variable bit rate (VBR) to deliver much higher quality sounds. An Apple Lossless file will be roughly half the size of a CD-Audio music file (so you get two full albums on one CD, not one), but up to five times larger than an AAC file.
11. Tagging 'em up
Keep track of your numbers by making sure you label them using ID3 tags. This is a means to integrate relevant data such as artist and album information in your MP3 player files. Most tracks are identified automatically by iTunes, but adding tags (use "Get Info" in iTunes) can be useful when you burn more obscure CDs.
12. Cutting duplicates
Should your iTunes become cluttered, try 'Show Duplicate Songs' choice. This feature allows you to easily delete tunes you have more than one copy of that empty space for new music. Go to 'Edit' menu, then select "Show Duplicate Songs'. Easy!
13. Pick up a podcast
A podcast is an audio clip distributed via the network, and is aimed at MP3 listeners. There is a wealth of free and paid-for podcasts available on iTunes, but you can also visit www.vitalpodcasts.com and www.podcastbunker.com. For automatic updates of new content, subscribe your favorite podcasts, and they get downloaded.
14. Take control
To avoid frequent switching between iTunes and whatever you're doing on your computer the moment test 'against it'. This allows you to control basic functions such as skip or pause tracks, either by adding a menu of controls to your toolbar or by using a series of hotkeys. A floating window will also tell you to track information about the melody, you listen to. For more information, check out www.mkd.cc take / against it.
15. Desktop clutter
Remember the simple joy of milled through your record Collectio, and control everything that glorious album art? Rod doing the same thing for iTunes: fill your desktop with album covers, so just click on any to start the play in iTunes. Smart! Primarily for www.sprote.com / root for the free software download.
16. Share tunes
MP3 need not be a lonely experience. Why not ditch those headphones and listen to your MP3 player, even your hi-fi system? The simplest way is to use a 3.5mm-jack to phono cable from the headphone connection to a input on your amplifier. The iChord from Chord Company is an excellent relationship, while Apple's Universal Dock is also noteworthy.
17. Docking Stations
If you want to use your iPod as your primary music 'hub', it is worth considering one of the many docks available. Sound quality can certainly vary back dock to dock, while features such as remote control, the ability to charge your iPod and a line-in jack is worth looking out for, too. To turn your iPod into a full-blown mini-system iPod Dock
18. Wireless for Sound
So the first thing we had all our music stored on our computers. So we took our tunes out on our MP3 players. So we took off our phones and shared our music collections. So what comes next? How about sending your music around your house? There are now more cheap and simple to use and install options, including Apple's Airport Express or Sonne Teer Bard USB that will work with all players.
19. Radio iPod
One thing the iPod lacking in comparison to many rival MP3 players on the market was an FM radio. Until now there. The new iPod Radio Remote weighs only 15g, and acts as a link between a suitable pair of headphones and USB connection port on your iPod. Make sure your iPod has had v1.1 software update, and - hey presto! a radio option is displayed on your iPod, so you are in business.
20. MP3 your motor
God forbid you be without your music collection when you're in your car! What about a simple laptop adapter who uses the car's cassette player to tap the speaker system? Visit www.gear4.com for more information. Otherwise, maybe you want something a little more permanent?
